Detroit Windmill

In 2001, Detroit Windmill was selected to participate in the Detroit City of Design Challenge with our proposed project: "Wind and Water" — a collaboration with the visionary land stewards at Feedom Freedom Growers 🌱⚡
Our project proposes a low-level wind turbine that uses wind technology and green energy to power, light, and irrigate a community garden on Detroit’s East Side. This innovative, sustainable infrastructure will support local food sovereignty and environmental justice — right where it’s needed most.
"Wind and Water" is rooted in the power of community and the potential of inclusive design. Through the City of Design Challenge, we worked alongside other changemakers to center Detroiters in the design process, creating tools for access, opportunity, and resilience.
This initiative aligns with the UNESCO Detroit City of Design Action Plan, offering direct support to community-led groups to bring their ideas to life and share them as models for other communities.
Together, we're building a future where clean energy sustains community gardens — and community gardens sustain us all. 🌻🌍💡 Feedom Freedom Design Core Detroit UN Sustainable Development Platform
