New research from Tufts suggests regular family dinners really can lower substance-use risk for many adolescents—but only up to a point.

In a national survey of 12–17-year-olds, higher-quality meals (good conversation, low distractions, shared enjoyment) were linked with a 22%–34% lower prevalence of alcohol, cannabis, and e-cig use among teens with little or moderate adversity.

For youth facing heavier stress and trauma, though, mealtimes alone didn’t offer the same protection. Those kids need trauma-informed support and additional ways to connect, inside and beyond the family.

A new randomized clinical trial suggests yoga can support treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD).

When added to standard buprenorphine care, daily yoga accelerated withdrawal stabilization and reduced anxiety, pain, and sleep problems. By calming the autonomic nervous system and improving emotion regulation, yoga appears to offer additive benefits alongside medication and therapy.
