Help birds and other wildlife by planting native shrubs.
💚💚💚
We have added shrub starts to our native nursery at an affordable price!
Native shrubs act as a foundational pillar for our food web. They do this by supplying nesting cover and by hosting native insects (caterpillars) that supply the nourishment to raise their young and the high fat berrirs that sustain them during winter months.
They add structure and depth to a garden and places for birds to nest.
💚💚💚
Sold in gallon pots, the shrub starts are at least 14" tall and fast growing!
Lindera benzoin, Spicebush
Cephalanthus occidentalis, Button Bush
Cornus sericea, Red-Twig Dogwood
Cornus amomum, Silky Dogwood
Physocarpus opulifolius, Common Ninebark

Plectocephalus americanusm, American Basket Flower
💜💜💜
This native annual draws so many bees and butterflies it is this weeks draw!
The prickly bracts resemble a basket weave and protect the blooms! The blooms have a honey scent and draw many of our native bees including bumble bees, sweat bees and and butterflies.
After they are done blooming in a few weeks we will leave the seed heads for the American Goldfinches.
Formerly classified as Centaurea.

Cephalanthus occidentalis, Button Bush!
🐝🐝🐝
This amazing multi-stemmed native shrub is one of our favorite wildlife plants. I do not think there is another plant that has blooms like the button bush.
It is often listed as a plant for rain gardens as it prefers wet conditions. We have one planted on the island in our pond, and it is thriving. But we also have planted it, as the photos show in front of our house on the city strip and two other dry locations at the farm. Obviously thriving! It once again proves how versatile natives can be.
🐝🐝🐝
It is considered a keystone plant because it is the host plant for 21 moth species incuding the two largest moths. It provides abundant nectar for a very long time. The spheres start as hard small balls, becoming large white speres with abundant nectar that then turn brown, forming nutlets which become ripe in late summer and feed up to 24 different species of birds. I only have to glance out the window to also see it provides important cover for the birds that come to our feeders.
🐝🐝🐝
It is an extermely fast growing shrub that can be cut back hard.
Yesterday we saw a Red Admiral butterfly zooming along the spere for nectar.
Consider growing Button Bush!
We have shrub starts that are about 14" tall for a reasonable price in our webstore.
