Sen. Bernie Sanders is criticizing President Donald Trump’s new AI executive order, saying it acknowledges real risks but does not go far enough to protect Americans.
In a post on X, Sanders said Trump had previously called efforts to regulate AI “foolish,” but now appears to recognize that artificial intelligence poses a legitimate threat.
Sanders said that was the “good news.” The “bad news,” according to him, is that Trump’s executive order is voluntary and “does almost nothing” to protect the public.
He argued that Congress needs to step in with stronger AI rules instead of relying on voluntary commitments from companies developing the technology.
The debate comes as lawmakers, tech executives and policymakers remain split over how aggressively AI should be regulated.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently called for national AI regulations, warning that conflicting state laws could slow innovation and weaken U.S. competitiveness.
Sen. Mark Kelly said AI is rapidly reshaping jobs, energy and the economy, and that policy should ensure workers benefit while the U.S. stays competitive.
Sen. Adam Schiff also said Americans are justified in doubting whether Congress can regulate AI effectively.
The takeaway: Washington increasingly agrees AI carries major risks, but the fight is now over whether voluntary guidelines are enough or Congress needs to impose stronger rules.
