Drummer, composer, producer of genre bending music and multimedia work exploring mental health, spirituality, masculinity, and healing
www.matthewdahermusic.com http://matthewdahermusic.bandcamp.com My musical endeavors and practices are driven by gnostic curiosity and are a vehicle for ontological exploration. After completing a Jazz Performance degree at McGill University in Montreal where I wa
s based for 7 years, I relocated to Detroit in 2012. I recently finished production on a 5 track solo EP that features original tracks inspired by Dilla, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Bjork, and Fiona Apple, with electroacoustic, ambient, noise, and post-rock sensibilities woven into the intricate fabric. The music will premier at a multimedia performance featuring work from various Detroit video and movement artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detrot (MOCAD) in February 2015. Other recent endeavors include:
"Try Not to Nod Off When I'm Cutting Around Your Ears" -a collaboration with Italian 'hand-made cinema' artist Tuia Charici (premiered at DLECTRICITY Nuit Blanche Detroit - September 2014)
"I Am Guilty" - a structured improvisation/performance piece featuring Rachel Ahn Harbert
Scoring “Tiny Ocean,” a short film by local director Peter Skorupskas featuring Langston Fishburne (to be released 2015)
"Bright Moon Mind" - an ambient piece released in October 2013 - with proceeds from downloads going to Still Point Zen Buddhist Temple in Woodbridge, Detroit. Various free-improvisation performances with local experimental musicians and visual artists
I am an organizer and curator of "Spectral Slumber" - a drone - multimedia sleepover show series, and of "Wet/Dry Mix" - a series dedicated to the intersection of electronic and acoustic improvisation - at Detroit Contemporary. I’m also a 2013 Co-Grand Prize Winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Competition in the Folk category with former bandmates from Corinna Rose and the Rusty Horse Band (Montreal). Currently my main focus is multimedia collaborations: film-makers, animators, dancers, artists of all mediums - if you like what you hear, give me a shout and let's make something happen.
