On the 40th anniversary of my graduation from University of Colorado Boulder, I had the incredible privilege of delivering the Norlin Charge to the Class of 2026.
Standing before more than 50,000 people and speaking to the largest graduating class in the history of CU Boulder, with more than 10,000 graduates, was a moment I will never forget.
In 1935, CU President George Norlin stood against political intimidation, racism, antisemitism, and the influence of the Ku Klux Klan when it threatened the university. He understood that education cannot survive where fear, censorship, and hatred are allowed to flourish.
At a time when we are witnessing attacks on Voting Rights Act, Blacks, Latinos, and immigrants, the devastating impact of the Dobbs decision on women’s healthcare and bodily autonomy, the corrosive influence of Citizens United on our democracy, and the continued rise of racism, antisemitism, hatred, and division across America, the Norlin Charge reminds us that education must stand for something greater.
I invite you to take a second and listen to the words that President Norlin delivered to the Class of 1935. Those words carry just as much meaning today in 2026 as they did nearly a century ago.
Congratulations, Class of 2026. I am so proud to forever share the title of Buff with each of you.
Sko Buffs forever.
Far too many Black organizations spend more time protecting white incumbents than building Black political power.
That has to change.
The Democratic Party calls Black voters the backbone of the party. If that is true, then Black communities deserve more than speeches and symbolism.
We deserve representation.
We deserve investment.
We deserve protection of our voting power.
And we deserve support for Black candidates who are willing to lead.
If Black voters are strong enough to save democracy, then Black candidates are qualified enough to lead it.
This conversation is bigger than Virginia.
This is about who gets heard, who gets protected, and who gets sacrificed when power is on the line.
Black representation matters.
Democracy matters.
My candidacy is about building a strong community where voices are valued and is protected. Wanda L. James CU Regent Wanda James, CD1
