My first introduction to calligraphy was through Chinese calligraphy, which I learned as a child in Chinese school. I never thought that decades later I’d have the chance to write Chinese calligraphy live at a event! This Lunar New Year celebration was beautifully designed by , and I loved sharing a bit about Chinese calligraphy with the guests. 

The character I’m writing, 福 (fú), means good fortune. It’s Lunar New Year tradition to hang one on your door to usher in luck for the coming year. Each of the guests got their own 福 to take home, and I did a giveaway for Year of the Horse calligraphy banners which were a hit!

I usually try to steer away from replicating fonts because if you wanted a font, you could have it perfectly printed, rather than having it uniquely hand lettered. We wanted K+D’s welcome sign to feel cohesive with their invitations, so I borrowed some flourishing inspiration from the font while still incorporating my signature calligraphy style.
