A bail bond company that issues a $100,000 bond for a defendant generally pays only 10 percent of the bail. If the defendant leaves town, the bail bond company has to pay the entire bond. A bounty hunter can save the bail bond company thousands of dollars or more by finding the defendant.

There are four basic bail bond types: cash, secured bail bond, unsecured bail bond, and OR (own recognizance). These types of bonds are contingent on behavior, cash bonds, property bonds, and surety bonds. Surety bonds are those handled by the bond agent.

Under the normal bail arrangement, two promises are involved. The defendant pays a part of the bail and promises to show up in court. The bail bond company promises to pay the entire amount of the bail to the court if the defendant decides instead to flee.

Most bail bond companies require 10 percent payment of the total bond (bail of $2,500 has a service fee of $250). This fee will not be returned, no matter the outcome, since it is considered a fee for the service.
