Should you skip breakfast?

It feels like this question comes up pretty regularly with new clients. Either they’ve thought about it or they’ve tried before and not sure if they made the right call.

Truth is, it depends. But let’s dive in a bit more.

At the end of the day, the prime driver of weight loss is going to come via a calorie deficit. Meaning that you need to eat fewer calories than your body burns.

Skipping breakfast is a quick way to drop your intake since you’re erasing a meal altogether. If the rest of your eating throughout the day stays the same, then you’ve made a considerable drop in calories.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The issue is that if you don’t plan accordingly, you might find that you eat slightly larger meals the rest of the day or have a very high intake on a weekend. Doing this means that you essentially void out that skipped meal and your overall calorie intake didn’t change.

But if you plan this method out and know what you’re doing or have a coach guiding you, skipping a meal can be a helpful tool for weight loss.

The first place to start is knowing a good target calorie range for your weight loss goals.

Then plan out how your lunch/dinners will look. You’ll probably need to add more things like veggies and lean proteins here so you meet those calorie ranges and still feel full and satiated.

If your daily/weekly routine already makes skipping breakfast easier then this path usually feels very natural. For example, I have a client who’s currently in residency at a hospital and so this approach worked perfectly with his long hours of patient care.

Again, skipping breakfast is not a primary weight-loss method but a strategy that can help that process along with other tools. As long as you plan accordingly, it can probably help you see results.
