How Do You... Slow Food Your 4th?
Holiday weekends are often synonymous with fast, processed convenience foods – think store-bought hot dogs, white buns, and bagged chips. But this weekend presents the perfect opportunity to slow down, connect with our local food system, and bring scratch cooking to the picnic table.
Slowing down your holiday menu isn’t about depriving yourself; it’s about upgrading your ingredients by supporting Colorado farmers markets, farm stands, small businesses, and local ranchers. Plus, it’s a beautiful time to honor the indigenous roots of the land we celebrate on by highlighting native ingredients.
Here are some delicious, slow-food swaps for your holiday weekend:
🍔 Instead of mystery-meat hot dogs or factory-farmed burgers: Source grass-fed beef, bison, or heritage pork from a local butcher or Colorado rancher. Want to honor indigenous flavors? Try ground bison burgers seasoned with wild juniper berries or sage.
🥖 Instead of highly processed white buns: Visit a local sourdough bakery or small business for fresh, naturally leavened buns made with locally grown and milled heritage grains. Check out the member map to find a local, grain-forward bakery or miller near you!
🌽 Instead of bagged potato chips: Opt for heirloom corn tortilla chips paired with a scratch-made three-sisters salsa (corn, beans, and squash – the foundational crops of Indigenous agriculture).
🍓 Instead of artificial sodas & ice cream: Muddle fresh market strawberries and basil into sparkling water for a refreshing soda. For dessert, make a scratch-made cobbler using local stone fruit or wild berries, or grab a pint from a local, small-batch creamery.
When we choose to cook from scratch and buy local, we aren't just making a meal – we are supporting our community and honoring the earth.
WE WANT TO KNOW: What is one local ingredient or scratch-made dish making it onto your table this weekend? Let us know in the comments!
