This “Black” History Month, we choose to reflect on our true origins, our rich African history that has been watered down, diluted, and confined into boxes. Who decided we should be called “Black”? Who determined that the vast depth of our identity, culture, and heritage could be reduced to a single color?
African history is not a monolith, nor is it bound by the labels others have placed upon us. We are the descendants of kings and queens, scholars, warriors, artists, and visionaries. The term “Black” oversimplifies a rich legacy that stretches far beyond any singular identifier. It does not capture the nuances of our diverse cultures, languages, or experiences.
We are more than the color that others chose for us. We are African history, alive and evolving, with stories untold and legacies yet to be fully recognized.
This month, we reclaim the narrative. We honor our past, our ancestors, and the millions who continue to break barriers and define who we are, not through labels, but through the power of our collective history and culture.
