WCRP to launch a Global Drought Information System.
2011 has seen devastating droughts in Africa and SW USA causing famine, wildfires and economic losses. Can we do better at providing early warnings so that farmers, aid agencies and global markets can take preparedness action? The World Climate Research Programme believes so. WCRP is launching a major new initiative to develop a “Global Drought Information System”. This system would provide a user anywhere in the world access to information on current scientific understanding of drought and the history of drought in that region, current conditions, causes of those conditions and forecasts.
