At 18, I went to chase dreams in California: a place born and reborn, one gold rush after another. Some people move to LA for the sun, but many more are drawn by the siren song of their own potential. Who among the Angelenos doesn’t hear the whispers, late at night, of their imagined greatness?

So we barrel in from every corner of the globe, sucked into the drain that splits the edge of the American continent and the Pacific. Maybe you land right where you dreamed you would. Sooner or later you get turned out. You find yourself on a dirty bridge in East LA looking up at a billboard of Gracie Abrams and think to yourself: “Is this it?”

But those of us who dream, even with all the failure, are not fools. There is triumph in the dreaming, the doing, and even in the departure on the way out of town.
