Today, I realized the first step of a long-term ministry that began in 1970: tracing and documenting the origin of the Walker Family's existence here on God's green earth. Specifically, the Nicholas Orlando Walker Family, currently located in Colorado and Texas, with partial holdings in Arkansas. All holdings are identified and listed in the Nicholas O. and Rosa L. Walker Trust.
The story begins in the 19th century when a German-Jewish immigrant family pioneered an area in Arkansas later identified as Pine Bluff and eventually incorporated into Jefferson County.
At that time, slavery remained the chief economic driver for the cotton crop and other agricultural operations that sprang up along the Arkansas River. The twist in our story came when a young German-Jew named Adolph Altschul "somehow" identified a "mulatto woman" whose family hailed from South Carolina. Her name was Margaret "Maggie" Carson. I can't wait to discover how that happened and learn more about her as a teenager brought to Arkansas from South Carolina.
The beauty of the story, however, peaks at several points leading up to the children and the Last Will and Testament of Adolph. Those points will come later as God wills. For now, know that "Maggie" provided Adolph with:
1. Several children, one of whom was my great-grandmother, Emma Altschul, who married a Smith and bore several more children. One of those children was my grandmother, Ada. Ada then married an Ames man and bore my mother, Edna. I was the firstborn.
2. A business partner. Maggie worked in the mercantile store owned by the Altschul family called BAMES. So, she was a business partner and, I suspect, not laboring in the field.
3. An Estate Executor. Adolph's Last Will and Testament specifies a "Love Letter" to his "wife, Maggie (not considered under the laws of this state,) my lawful wife, whom I have love and affection for and consider my true and lawful wife..."
In short, this "mulatto woman" blew Mr. Altschul's mind, of course, in my humble opinion!
So, to my wife and children—my extended and biological family—whom I have love and affection for and consider my true and lawful family, What 'Cha Gonna do with What 'cha Got?
