Good morning! Let’s talk about the Texas heat and what it’s doing to our avians!
Mississippi kites are amazing Raptors. They come here to North Texas from South America every year and return to their Geo locations to breed, have their young and then everybody migrates back down to South America in the fall!
It’s important for you to be able to recognize what an adult Mississippi kite looks like, a fledgling/juvenile and a chick. Chicks will fall out of their nests due to the heat and just because they sometimes just crawl over the edge and fall. When a chick is on the ground, you must act quickly. Wear your gardening gloves, scoop it up and put it in a small cardboard box lined with a nice padding of paper towel and get it inside in a bathroom, close the door and turn out the light, then contact your federally permitted Wildlife rehabilitator and/or Wildlife Center. I work closely with Blackand Prairie Raptor Center, Rogers Wildlife, and several federally permitted wildlife veterinarians. If you find a Mississippi kite chick on the ground, of course you are welcome to text me at 940-442-8289 and I will get you to your closest federally permitted center or rehabilitator. If you have questions, you are also welcome to text and always remember to send a picture.
Here’s an article that I think says everything I would want to say!
Mississippi Kites, August in Texas - Bird Tails We that live in North Texas are in the flyway for the migratory bird, Mississippi Kites. The adult arrive in our area in spring from South America, breed and in the hottest days of summer, the kite…
*** Good morning everyone-I was appalled to see so many trolls deliberately baiting and being nasty here on our very peaceful and loving page. I have spent valuable time this morning, going through and hiding and blocking at least 10 or more trolls. When you see somebody commenting that just doesn’t align with what we’re talking about here, go to their profile and see if they are a fake or not before you even comment. The whole idea is for them to get you riled up and mad. Well, I’m mad enough for all of us! The rehabs on this page know exactly what I’m talking about. We absolutely dread these holidays where fireworks are set off because we know how many babies get abandoned or killed or concussed by fireworks. So just be aware that I don’t allow any negativity or idiocy on my page. I will block any troll that I find. And if you think something is suspicious, you text me at 940-442-8289 and let me take care of it! Now let’s get out there and be the beacon of light for our Wildlife! ***
Good morning! Let’s talk about fireworks. No - don’t scroll away. It’s important.
I know everyone loves fireworks. Let me tell you what happened (and this is only from the calls I personally received). Birds on the ground. Coyotes huddled up against a deck trying to take cover. Baby squirrels scattered from their tree nests.
Fireworks were set off all over Denton. People don’t care that it is hot and dry and Ouray is burning because of them.
Fireworks were set off at the bottom of my street (Aileen) and the Kiwanis’ display was at the fairgrounds this year (thank you! At least away from the shelter!)
Between 8:45 pm and midnight I received over 25 calls for distressed wildlife here in Denton. Not dogs. Not cats. Wildlife. The next morning even more calls.
In Plano, a friend who has a screech owl box texted me frantic as could be. Why? Mom screech owl had just finished laying her four eggs and had fled the nest box when her idiot neighbor (apparently they do this every year) lit off big fireworks and didn’t come back - until last night. She had already started incubating those eggs. Then she left.
Deeply grateful that she returned last night but that was TWO days that those eggs were left vulnerable.
If your ego and wants are that important that you can’t take into consideration not only other people’s peace but the injury, death and stress that it causes our domestic animals, war veterans and wildlife, then yes - please keep scrolling and I hope that someday you change and grow.
People need to receive big time fines and not a warning. Known offenders need to be nicely approached to remind them that they can’t light fireworks.
Sky Elements needs to be who we have next year. Not fireworks.
(Video below is when she returned - TWO DAYS LATER)
