COUNTDOWN TO 250!
On this day, the Continental Congress approved Richard Henry Lee’s Resolution for Independence, formally declaring that the United Colonies “are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States.”
Twelve colonies voted in favor. New York abstained while awaiting further instructions from its provincial convention.
Although Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4—the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted—it was on July 2, 1776, that Congress officially voted for independence.
