Preparing for Increased AO Oversight & Unannounced Surveys
CMS has finalized its rule strengthening oversight of Accrediting Organizations (AOs), effective June 16, 2027. The rule emphasizes unannounced surveys, tighter alignment with Medicare Conditions of Participation, and stricter separation between accreditation and consulting activities. This will raise expectations for consistency and accountability across survey processes.

Why it matters:
Agencies must maintain true, continuous survey readiness with less flexibility for advance preparation and limited support from accrediting bodies.
