🇺🇸 Proper Flag Etiquette for Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Memorial Day, observed each year on the last Monday in May, honors the servicemembers who gave their lives in service to the United States.

On this day, the American flag is flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, then raised briskly to full-staff for the remainder of the day. This unique tradition reflects both remembrance and resolve: mourning the fallen in the morning, and honoring their sacrifice by continuing forward in the afternoon.

When lowering to half-staff, remember to raise the flag to the top first, then lower it slowly to the halfway position. At noon, raise it back to full-staff.

May 8 marks Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), commemorating the Allied victory in Europe during World War II in 1945. On this day, Germany formally surrendered, bringing the war in Europe to an end.

VE Day stands as a moment of reflection on the courage, sacrifice, and determination of those who served, as well as the beginning of the end of one of history’s most major conflicts.

VE Day is also celebrated as a flag-flying holiday! The American flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset in honor of those who helped secure victory and restore peace.

Observed on the first Sunday in May, Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day honors the brave firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty protecting their communities.

This day is recognized as a half-staff observance in the United States. The American flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset as a mark of respect and remembrance.

When lowering the flag to half-staff, remember to first raise it quickly to the top, then slowly lower it to the halfway position.

Among egg hunts, church services, and family get-togethers, Easter Sunday is widely celebrated as a flag-flying holiday, making it one of the many days throughout the year when Americans are encouraged to proudly display the Stars and Stripes.

To participate, quickly hoist your flag up to its highest position at sunrise, and ceremoniously lower it at sunset.

If you’re celebrating Easter this year, it’s a great opportunity to raise the American flag as part of the day’s activities. 🇺🇸
