Travel training teaches much more than how to get from one place to another. It teaches students how to problem-solve, adapt, stay aware of their surroundings, and build confidence in real-world situations. Every bus ride, train stop, schedule check, and decision made along the way helps students become more independent and prepared for life after school. The ability to travel safely and confidently opens doors to work, college, recreation, and greater participation in the community. It also helps students build trust in themselves and their ability to handle situations independently. Travel training is not simply transportation instruction, it is real-life learning in action. Today's quote reminds us that when students learn how to navigate their community, they are also learning how to navigate greater independence in life.

There is a growing conversation around AI in education, especially when it comes to students receiving accommodations and support services. Too often, the discussion focuses only on whether students should use AI instead of how it is being used.

Like any accommodation, the purpose of AI should not be to remove learning. The purpose should be to increase access.

For some students, AI can help:
• organize thoughts
• improve communication
• reduce barriers with reading or writing
• support executive functioning
• increase participation and confidence

The goal is not dependence on technology.
The goal is greater independence through support.

Students already use accommodations every day to access learning in different ways. AI has the potential to become another tool that helps students engage more independently when used intentionally and responsibly.

Today's quote reminds us that accommodations are not about lowering expectations. They are about creating access while continuing to build the skills students need for life beyond school.

Travel training is often misunderstood as simply teaching students how to use transportation, but it is so much more than that. It is about helping students build the confidence and skills needed to navigate the world more independently. When students learn how to read schedules, follow directions, problem-solve, ask for help, and travel safely, they are building real-life skills that extend far beyond the bus or train. Travel training creates access to work opportunities, college experiences, community involvement, recreation, and greater independence in everyday life. It also teaches flexibility, responsibility, and decision-making in real environments where students can apply what they learn. The ability to travel independently can change the level of freedom and opportunity a student has after leaving school. Today's quote reminds us that travel training is not just about transportation; it is about building the confidence and independence needed to participate more fully in life.

“Independence is not achieved by doing more for students, but by doing more with them in real environments where they can practice the skills they need for life.”

Independence is not something that can be taught only inside a classroom. It is built through real experiences, real decisions, and real responsibility. While instruction and support are important, they are only the starting point. Students need opportunities to apply what they learn in environments that actually resemble life. That is where skills begin to stick. When we move from doing things for students to doing things with them, we create space for growth, confidence, and independence. This means practicing skills in the community, at work, and in everyday situations, not just through worksheets or structured lessons. Today's quote reminds us that independence is built through experience, and that the best learning happens when students are actively engaged in the world around them.

At SELF, we believe teaching is more than delivering academic content. It is building independence.

Every day, teachers are doing the real work that often goes unseen.
They are coaching decision-making, modeling problem-solving, and creating opportunities for students to grow beyond the classroom.

For students with diverse learning needs, this work is even more powerful.
It is not just about academic success. It is about preparing for life.

During Teacher Appreciation Week, we recognize the educators who are closing the Independence Gap every single day.
Who are shifting from helpers to coaches.
Who are building the skills that students will carry long after graduation.

From myself and SELF, thank you for building independence for life after school.
