" , 75 years ago, six nations signed the Treaty of Paris, establishing the European Coal and Steel Community β€” a bold and unprecedented step toward lasting peace in Europe.
Born from the vision of the Schuman Plan (named after French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman), the ECSC placed the coal and steel industries β€” essential for war efforts β€” under shared European authority. By making former rivals interdependent, it aimed not just at economic recovery, but at rendering war between them β€œnot merely unthinkable, but materially impossible.”
Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and fellow leaders from France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg embraced this vision: a Europe bound together by common interests, cooperation, and trust. For the Federal Republic of Germany, it marked a historic shift β€” from imposed oversight to voluntary partnership within a united Europe. This peace project laid the foundation for today’s European Union."
