Governor Oglesby Mansion
The Italianate style mansion with over 8 fireplaces, maple and walnut floors, and the authentic Oglesby library is an incredible sight to see with an even more interesting story to tell. Governor Oglesby was a father, a US Senator, a Civil War general, a 3-time Illinois Governor, and a friend of Abraham Lincoln. Touring his home is only a small window into his life during the 1800's but an incredible way to experience Macon County history.

Happy 200th birthday, Julia Dent Grant! This summer, the museum at Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site will be home to a special exhibit: Julia Dent Grant: A 200 Year Legacy. The exhibit will contain various artifacts pertaining to Julia's life here in St. Louis and her travels around the country and the world. The park will be highlighting several of these artifacts online this summer, so check back each week to see which artifact is featured!
This week's featured artifact from the special exhibit "Julia Dent Grant: A 200-Year Legacy" is a cabinet card photo of Julia Dent Grant by famous Civil War photographer Mathew Brady. Taken during Ulysses S. Grant's second term as president, this photo features Julia as First Lady of the United States circa 1873-1877. The photo is on loan for the exhibit from the Missouri Historical Society. You can learn more about it on the Missouri History Museum page.

Oglesby was by Lincoln’s bedside when he died and accompanied Lincoln’s body back to Springfield, Illinois, where Oglesby was elected as president of the National Lincoln Monument Association to raise funds for and to design the tomb that Lincoln would be buried in. Oglesby delivered the dedication address when the memorial was unveiled in 1874. President Ulysses S. Grant and the cabinet were in attendance.
