Please visit our website: chrispriest2012.com The decision to run for Morgan County Circuit Clerk was not one taken lightly. It was entered into after discussions with fellow attorneys, my partners, business leaders, and, most importantly, prayer with my family and friends. Budget Cuts Affect Clerk’s Office Staffing
In September, 2011, the Morgan County Circuit Clerk’s Office lost approximately
half of its staff due to budget cuts. These cutbacks have caused the court system to run at a considerably slower pace resulting in longer time from initial filing of a case until it is tried in court. The current Clerk is retiring and it will be my responsibility to roll up my shirtsleeves and go to work immediately to ensure consistent processing of the court files. Time is of the essence and my legal knowledge and experience will allow me to begin this work without interruption or delay. Legal Experience with the Court System
Practicing in Morgan County since 2000, I have worked in all areas of our local court system including civil, domestic, criminal, and juvenile. My experience also includes appealing cases to the circuit court and to the appellate courts. With the knowledge gained from practicing law in Morgan County, I will work to ensure that the Clerk’s office stays consistent with its filings in order to prevent the rippling effects of jail overcrowding, overwhelming domestic workload, and the inability of the judges to hear civil disputes, all of which can occur with cuts in staffing. Appointment as Morgan County Special Judge of Probate
Over the past six years, when the Morgan County Probate Judge has had conflicts of interest and is unable to hear a case before him, the Morgan County Circuit Judges have appointed me to serve as Special Judge of Probate. This appointment has occurred consistently when the sitting judge is unable to hear the case before him. This experience has given a greater insight and understanding of the court system. Knowledge of Accounting Necessary with Position
My experience as Morgan County Guardian and Conservator allows me to understand the accounting issues facing the clerk’s office. In this capacity, the Probate Court appoints me to assist and manage the funds of residents of Morgan County who are found judicially incapacitated to handle their own affairs. The clerk’s office finances will be maintained in a manner consistent with current accounting practices and will promote efficiency in reporting data. Dedication to Community
Having leadership experience as a small business owner as well as being involved in various civic organizations allows me to understand the needs of the residents of Morgan County. I will work hard to maintain the organization and accessibility of the court system and will strive to keep Morgan County on the forefront of technology to better serve the residents of Morgan County. I look forward to being Morgan County Circuit Court Clerk and will use my expertise and experience to proactively respond to the challenges facing our county and our court system. Please vote for me, Chris Priest, in the general election on November 6, 2012.
