On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, officially established the Continental Army. This pivotal vote organized colonial forces to defend against the British, marking the birth of what is today the United States Army.

Key Details of the Event
The Vote: Congress authorized the enlistment of ten companies of expert riflemen—six from Pennsylvania, two from Maryland, and two from Virginia.

First Troops: These riflemen were immediately dispatched to join the local militia forces already surrounding Boston, Massachusetts.

Leadership: The very next day, on June 15, 1775, Congress unanimously voted to appoint George Washington as Commander-in-Chief of this newly formed continental force.

Legacy: Because of this historic resolution, June 14 is annually celebrated as the official birthday of the U.S. Army.
