For a single professional woman, the person you consider family may be a sibling, partner, best friend, godchild, niece, mentor, or someone who has shown up for you for years.

But personal closeness and legal inheritance are not the same thing.

I concentrated in estate planning in law school, and part of my early career was spent working in financial planning.

I liked the numbers; there were calculations, rules, and questions that could be worked through until you reached an answer. But families are not spreadsheets.

Over time, I learned that the technical answer is only part of good planning: an account can be perfectly calculated and still create a problem if the wrong person is named, and a legal document can be perfectly drafted and still fall short if it doesn’t reflect the relationships, concerns, and values of the person signing it.

It’s why I care so much about explaining the reason behind the recommendation. I want clients to understand how the legal documents, assets, people, and family dynamics that don’t show up on a balance sheet connect.

Estate planning still appeals to the part of me that likes clarity and structure, but the work means more because that structure serves real people.
