Practice Listening to Understand, Not to Correct
Children often stop sharing when they feel unheard.
When your child talks, pause your urge to fix, interrupt, or teach. Just listen. Nod. Validate.
Try this:
• “That sounds really hard. Thank you for telling me.”
• “I understand you felt embarrassed. I’ve felt that way too.”
This kind of listening builds deep trust and emotional safety.

Create a Safe Emotional Space at Home
Children need a place where feelings are always welcome.
You can create a “Calm Corner”, a small area with pillows, books, sensory toys, or journals where they can breathe, draw, or talk it out.
How to start:
When they’re upset, guide them there and say, “Let’s take some time to feel and calm down together.”
Over time, they’ll associate emotions with safety, not punishment.

Build Confidence by Praising the Process, Not the Outcome
Many parents accidentally tie love to achievement. When you praise effort, your child learns they’re valuable even when things don’t go perfectly.
Instead of: “You’re so smart.”
Say: “I love how you kept trying even when it was hard.”
How to start:
At dinner, ask each child to share one thing they worked hard on today, not necessarily what they won at.
This teaches that growth matters more than perfection.
