Red Cup Cleanup

Red Cup Cleanup

Share

We are collecting used red cups and sending them to an organization called Terracycle, which uses the cups to make new plastic products. This provides a three-fold benefit:
1) the cups get recycled
2) it stops new plastic being produced to make these products
3) Terracycle donates two cents per cup to a charity of our choice. So what's wrong with just recycling the cups through the city of Davis?

Is it OK to ship recyclables cross-country -- if landfill is the alternative? 09/02/2015

Thoughts for your hump day: although it's better to reduce consumption, sending your "trash" across the country to be recycled seems to be a better alternative than having it end up in a landfill.

Is it OK to ship recyclables cross-country -- if landfill is the alternative? Sure, sending trash far away burns more carbon than recycling it locally. But recycling it far away still beats trashing it. Umbra sorts the tradeoffs.
