Congratulations to Jason Pieck, the 2026 University Medal winner.

The University Medal is the highest honor awarded to a graduating senior at UC Davis.

When Jason arrived on campus, they were looking for community. Along the way, they co-founded Cyclone RoboSub, performed with the UC Davis Percussion Ensemble and found connection through clubs, leadership and self-discovery.

A career in wildlife and exotic animal medicine has taken Doug Mader ’79, M.S. ’82, DVM ’86, Residency ’88, from the Florida Keys to conservation efforts around the globe.

That career nearly took a different path when a serious car accident during graduate school forced him to overcome significant physical challenges.

Mentorship and a lifelong commitment to animal health helped shape the veterinarian, conservation advocate and educator he is today.
