The setting sun cut through this overcast Dallas sky for all of 5 minutes on the evening we filmed this scene with . One of those serendipitous filmmaking moments that makes you feel fortunate to be doing the work. ☀️

We don’t often have the opportunity to incorporate visual effects in our nonfiction work.
For our latest collaboration with Thrive Scholars, we fell in love with a specific image: our NASA-loving subject nurturing his passion for space under the soft glow of a star field. We found a suitable planetarium at El Camino College but discovered on the day of the shoot that the projected star map wasn’t bright enough to register with our light-hungry cameras. What were we to do?
With the help of El Camino’s clever and friendly staff, we had the idea to shoot the sequence with bright, white light bouncing into the planetarium’s dome. The brightness would both produce the desired glow on our subject’s face and (hopefully) allow us to use a luma key to extract the brightest parts of the frame and replace them with a field of stars (captured elsewhere using photographic equipment better suited for this purpose).
Swipe to compare before and after. How did we do? Are we ready to make Avatar 2? https://vimeo.com/607070131

In 2021, we partnered with Thrive Scholars to tell the origin stories of three of their stellar participants. Thrive helps high-achieving students of color from low-income communities access the opportunities they need to excel at top colleges and in meaningful careers.
It was no small task telling three complete stories in under four minutes, but it helped that they all shared the same theme: passion + opportunity = a vibrant future. How can we make sure this equation applies to ALL young people? 🤔
