What does Botox actually do?
It’s often said that Botox paralyzes the muscle. I always think of paralysis as a permanent event. Botox acts by sitting in the muscle receptor blocking the activation.
It acts very similar to ibuprofen or Tylenol in how it blocks the receptor for a short period of time.
On average, Botox will sit in the receptor for 3 months blocking the activation. After that time, the protein falls off the receptor and activation continues as normal.
Is Botox permanent? No, but that’s a good thing. It’s a little maintenance throughout the year, just like getting your hair cut.
