The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) was founded in 1957, a time when the U.S. military was scrapping the fleet of aircraft that had played a decisive part in winning World War II. With the rallying cry “Keep ‘Em Flying”, the initial goal of the CAF was to preserve, in flying condition, at least one example of each aircraft flown by the American Forces from 1939-45. July 4th was a busy day for the CAF. Out west, the CAF SoCal Wing's Hellcat appeared at a 4th of July event in Livermore, CA. Here she is taking off to head back to its home base in Camarillo. If you listen closely at the beginning, you can hear a faint whistle: this is the sound of her R-2800’s main-stage supercharger!
Did you know that the Hellcat produced more fighter aces in WWII than any other aircraft? Some 305 U.S. Navy Hellcat pilots became aces (five or more victories), and Hellcat pilots were credited with more than 5,100 aerial victories in all. The F6F accounted for approximately 75% of all U.S. Navy aerial victories in the Pacific. It compiled an extraordinary 19:1 kill ratio against Japanese aircraft.
