During the War of 1812, American soldiers were supplied with shipments of beef labeled “U.S. Beef,” which actually came from a New York meatpacker named Sam Wilson. Soldiers began calling their rations “Uncle Sam’s beef,” giving rise to the iconic character and nickname "Uncle Sam" that is still recognized today!!
