BREEL EMBOLO DIDN'T TRAVEL WITH THE SWISS SQUAD BECAUSE OF PAPER ISSUES π³
Ahead of Switzerlandβs departure for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, Swiss striker Breel Embolo was unexpectedly unable to travel with the squad to the United States.
The Swiss Football Federation said that his Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), which had previously been approved, was suddenly placed under review by the U.S. authorities on the day the team was due to leave. As a result, Embolo remained in Switzerland while his teammates flew to their training camp, although officials expressed hope that the issue would be resolved quickly and that he would join the squad later.
The travel complication is linked to a legal case stemming from a 2018 altercation in Basel. In 2023, Embolo was convicted of making multiple threats and received a suspended fine. His appeal was unsuccessful, and the ruling became final after he chose not to pursue the matter further. Swiss officials indicated that this legal history appears to have triggered the review of his U.S. Travel authorization.
Despite the setback, the federation remained optimistic that Embolo would eventually receive clearance and take part in Switzerlandβs World Cup campaign.
