that delivers HIFU to ablate prostatic tissue is called Sonablate. The doctor plans, monitors and adjusts the HIFU treatment using the Sonablate computer console. The Sonablate has safety features designed to prevent injury to adjacent organs, such as the re**um. The Sonoblate received FDA approval for prostate ablation in October of 2015. The Sonoblate enables the physician to identify the location of nerves responsible for preserving potency during the HIFU procedure and avoid them as needed. Additionally, the lesion size created by the Sonablate can conform to the shape of the gland, making treatment truly customized for each individual patient. The Sonablate can identify the neurovascular bundles (NVB) thus giving the patient a better chance of preserving erectile function. The Sonablate has state-of-the-art software that enables physicians to obtain real-time images of the prostate that are used to map out and target exactly where HIFU should be delivered. The software gives doctors several different angles to view the prostate for customized planning. Once the treatment plan is mapped, HIFU energy is delivered to those areas. While HIFU is being delivered to heat and destroy tissue in the prostate, the physician monitors how the tissue is changing, to ensure the procedure is effectively destroying tissue and allowing adjustments, as needed for the best outcome. About the HIFU Procedure

*Performed as an outpatient procedure, so there is no overnight hospitalization required.

*Patients are usually discharged from the hospital the same day they are treated.

*The HIFU procedure typically lasts between 1-4 hours, depending on the size of the prostate. This is usually done under general anesthesia or an epidural and IV sedation.

*During the procedure, a catheter will be placed, either through the abdomen or through the p***s to help with urination, and will typically stay in place for 1-3 weeks.

*After HIFU treatment, the patient will be observed post procedure for about 2-4 hours, then discharged to recover more comfortably at home or hotel.
