Defense By Design

A Jersey Mike's manager has gone viral over his handling of a woman coming in for her "free birthday sub," which the company does offer/promote...but with a caveat.

I am not linking the story on this one as I typically do as all such videos I've seen come with some rather "colorful" commentary I do not support.

Like many such chains, Jersey Mike's has a member/rewards program that typically requires you to subscribe in order to claim such rewards, I belong to several of these myself. But the woman involved was 'not' a subscriber, she simply came in expecting her free reward on her birthday. All the videos I have seen only picked up 'after' the disagreement had already escalated.

The manager most certainly could have conducted himself with more professional demeanor, especially 'as' the manager, but he is also human and made a mistake, one that has unfortunately gone viral and may well cost him his job. And if it does, being again the 'manager,' how will this impact that owner in staffing, recruitment, training, operations, productivity, profits and now public image? This is why I constantly now address as a part of both and for any and all .

"But 'MY' people know better" is not a defense, it is an assumption -- a 'HUGE' assumption, one that can cost you dearly as just noted above.

But do not assume your people 'know better' -- make SURE they do!

Far too many people 'assume' by the way someone is dressed, what car they drive, what part of town they live/shop in, the other person's age/gender/size/etc. that the other person is safe/unsafe, trustworthy or untrustworthy. All this based simply upon appearance.
