U.S. immigration agency moves to cut 9.5 million-case backlog and speed up processing The measures announced by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) include allowing more applicants to pay extra fees to have their applications processed more quickly.

Just over a week after Russian rockets first began to slam into Ukraine, more than 1.3 million people have fled over the borders of neighbouring European countries into a frightening and uncertain future. What we are witnessing, the United Nations has warned, is the largest refugee crisis in a century.

"While some people arriving at the border may not be refugees, anyone who ... claims to have a well-founded fear of being persecuted in their country of origin - they should have access to asylum and to have their claim assessed before being subjected to expulsion or deportation"

Rather than bringing people to safety via transit centers and, ultimately, to countries including the United States, these flights are sending vulnerable migrants and asylum-seekers back to danger — returning them to the very places they’re fleeing.
