NEW HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION POLICY IN TEXAS!

In 2023, the Texas legislature raised the homestead exemption amount on school taxes from $40k to $100k. Starting in 2024, all appraisal districts have a directive to reevaluate all in-place exemptions. Many districts will check this box by requiring a review every 5 years and some homeowners may be asked to reapply. It’s free to apply but this changes from a one and done application to a potential reapply scenario.

What does this mean for you?

🏡 Keep an eye on your mail! If you get something from your appraisal district review it carefully to make sure you don’t miss your chance to reapply and lose your home exepmtion status.

🏡 Check your status! Many counties allow you to check if you have a homestead exemption on your property by going online, searching property and selecting “exemptions”.

🏡 There is no fee for filing! Many companies offer to file for you but the process is quite simple and does not require anyone to file for you.
