Does your team know the system or are they just reacting to the game?
Every winning team has two things:
a system of play and a shape.
In business, the system is how you intend to win.
The shape is how your team organizes and adjusts when conditions change.
Too many companies have talented people, busy teams, and constant movement—but no clear answer to:
What system do we run?
What does offense look like here?
How do we adjust when the game changes?
Great leaders make the system clear, the roles understood, and the adjustments natural.
If the answers are inconsistent, the issue usually isn’t effort.
It’s design.
And design is a leadership responsibility.

Take Your Kid to Work Day: Edition
My wife and I brought our son with us as we head to a leadership conference in Miami and honestly, nothing brings me more joy.
Not because he needs to “learn business overnight”…but because I want him to see it.
The early mornings.
The travel days.
The conversations that sharpen you.
The discipline it takes to build something real beyond sports, beyond school, beyond what most people ever see.
I want him to experience my world early so the “school of hard knocks” doesn’t have to hit as hard later.

If your people strategy can’t withstand volatility, it’s not a strategy, it’s a wager.
Consulting giants are bleeding talent, not just from layoffs, but from relevance.
Latest reports show McKinsey dropped over 10% of its workforce, the biggest cut in its history. Deloitte and Booz Allen are right behind. And while everyone’s pointing to AI, legal fallout, or federal budget shifts…
There’s a deeper truth most leaders won’t say out loud:
They hired for capacity, not capability.
And now that the tide’s receding, only performance remains.
In unstable markets, headcount becomes a liability, unless that headcount is built to move, adapt, and produce under pressure.
That’s why The Business Athlete exists.
- Not just trained professionals, but practiced performers.
- Conditioned for uncertainty.
- Powered by discipline, brand awareness, and energy management.
- Capable of protecting ROI even when systems shake.
My takeaway?
You don’t rise to the occasion. You fall to your level of preparation.
Now is the time to:
- Audit your internal team like a pro roster.
- Train your talent like athletes, not just employees.
- Build in resilience & recovery as an operating principle, not a reaction plan.
The firms that will win in the next 24 months aren’t the biggest.
They’re the most conditioned.

Have you ever watched the best players when they are off the ball? 🤔
I used to love watching clips not for the where the ball was, but watching what was happening all around.
What you see from the best is that they are never standing still.
The best know that standing still in one space is giving an advantage to the defense, becoming easily marked. They are taught to get in and get out.
We have to move and make ourselves available, things change and we have to change with it, creating space at times that didn’t exist before but is now where you need to be in case the ball is played that direction.
That is being a good team player, anticipation and with your actions building trust in your team members, so that when the time comes, you will be in the space that the teams needs.
As a leader, are you watching your players “off-ball” movement???
As a player, are you engaged in the match or growing roots???
