TBell has been an acting coach for the past thirteen years. She was trained in Los Angeles by the late, great Roy London. Roy London coached many of LA's most working actors, as well as many award
Theresa is using animal imagery " a chihuahua puppy that got into the coffee"
to unlock a character's energy for an actor who was playing it too calm. But the deeper teaching is her signature note:
Find what's broken in the scene.
Not just the circumstances. Not just the relationship. What is broken in this specific person? That's where the performance lives. The animal image is just the tool to get the actor out of their head and into the body of the character.
Theresa is coaching an actor playing a bad auditioner, a character who does everything wrong in an audition scene. The twist is the student played it too well; too polished, too composed. The comedy and truth of the character comes from deep humiliation, nervous wreck energy, and zero self-awareness.
The lesson underneath this is profound:
Playing a bad actor requires you to be a great one.
You have to fully commit to the character's failure without your own actor instincts saving them.
Theresa is using the Good Will Hunting therapy scene, the moment Robin Williams' character reveals he's from South Boston, to teach one of the deepest principles in acting psychology:
We bond with people through our wounds.
The character shifts the moment he learns the kid is from the same rough place he came from. That shared pain creates an instant, involuntary connection. That's not a plot device. That's human truth. And it's what actors need to understand about their characters and themselves.
