📢 Important Update for Texas Notaries – What to Expect in 2026

If you’re planning to become a Texas notary—or renew your commission—there are important changes coming in 2026 that you should be aware of.

Beginning January 1, 2026, the Texas Secretary of State will require all Texas notary applicants (new, renewing, and online notaries) to complete a mandatory education course and pass an exam.

Key highlights include:
✔️ State-required notary education course (about 90 minutes)
✔️ Course offered exclusively by the Texas Secretary of State
✔️ $20 per attempt
✔️ 70% passing score
✔️ Up to three attempts within a three-month period
✔️ Applications submitted but not completed before Jan. 1, 2026 may also be affected

Texas is also transitioning to an electronic-only application process, making it easier to submit applications, upload documents, and receive approval updates online.

These updates are designed to strengthen notary education, improve compliance, and support professionalism across the state.

If you’re considering becoming a Texas notary in 2026—or helping others through the process—now is the time to get informed and prepare ahead.
