We are stepping into a new era of social media with Meta's Instagram recently launching a novel platform - Threads. Its interface may seem very familiar but don't be fooled by the surface similarities. What lies beneath is a game-changer for social networking - Threads is built on ActivityPub, a technology that I believe holds immense potential to democratize our digital conversations.
So, why is ActivityPub noteworthy? It is a web protocol designed to create, update, delete content, and deliver notifications across various servers. What sets it apart is its decentralization - enabling communities and individuals to own their data and orchestrate their online interactions. Adopted as an official World Wide Web Consortium recommendation in 2018, it is revolutionizing how we communicate on the web.
Think of it like email. You don't need the same service provider as the person you're sending an email to. Similarly, ActivityPub empowers users on different servers or platforms to interact freely, unhindered by the boundaries of individual platforms.
This level of cross-platform functionality paves the way for more open, connected digital communities. Imagine a social media landscape where data silos are a thing of the past, and content can flow freely across networks, regardless of their underlying platforms.
With Threads, Meta has signaled a significant shift towards a more decentralized, open social networking experience. It's a thrilling development for all of us who champion online freedom.

ActivityPub Rocks! Don't you miss the days when the web really was the world's greatest decentralized network? Before everything got locked down into a handful of walled gardens? So do we.

Ever wonder when society realized that the right to privacy was something to care about? In 1890, some fantastic tech came into being: the camera. This invention led to the publication of 'The Right to Privacy' by two young Boston lawyers, Samuel Warren and Louis Brandeis. They were concerned this cutting edge technology would "invade the sacred precincts of private domestic life; and numerous mechanical devices threaten to make good the prediction' what is whispered in the closet shall be proclaimed from the rooftop'" Many did not understand the profound implications of the concept of 'privacy as a human right' at the time.
Welcome to 2023: Both Neurotech + AI tech were far-fetched science fiction only a few years ago yet here we are at the edge of redefining what it means to be human and how privacy works in a world we can barely imagine. What do you think about the boundries of privacy for the future?
