California just made cartons officially recyclable. The state updated its SB 343 findings to confirm that food and beverage cartons meet California's sortation threshold for recyclable labeling.

This means cartons can now be labeled with the chasing arrows symbol and marketed as recyclable, because they're being sorted at large-volume facilities serving 62 percent of California counties. Three MRFs recently came online with carton sortation capability, joining facilities already sorting cartons into high-grade bales for end markets.

The update reflects growing investment in carton recovery infrastructure across California.

CRI supports CA AB 1149, a bill that would extend CalRecycle’s authority to pay Plastic Market Development (PMD) payments in the state through 2029 and invest funds annually for PMD payments to plastic reclaimers and product manufacturers. CRI signed onto a coalition letter with 21 other organizations in the recycling space to support this bill.
