Reliving my collaborations with artist during the replacement cover for The Landfill and subsequent new covers for The Hydra and TBWF. Scroll through these and you’ll see my extremely crude sketches turned into believable artwork through Casey’s artistry. Some of these first drafts were for The Hydra’s cover mockups. I’m getting closer to needing a cover for the last book of The Landfill Collective-The Beast.

I’m a bit stubborn. It took me 30+ years to read the last book of this series. It was so different from the first two. I devoured them quickly. Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandria have been a huge influence on me personally and on my writing for decades. That Hideous Strength- I’m embarrassed to say I had no patience for until this fall. As a related side note: Like any goal in life, take the time to finish. Press on, not everything or everyone along the path will be a joy for us. Sometimes, you are the joy for another on their walkabout. Back to The Space Trilogy- Maybe it’s because I’m older, the first two thirds of this book were necessary as a contrast to how dramatic and parallel to the first two this one became. If you haven’t read this series, gift yourself with it soon. It’s that good!

Acorns… donuts… see any similarities here?

This squirrel just figured out how to buy donuts… without cash.

A bakery worker in Michigan noticed something unusual during her early morning shifts.
Every day, around the same time she clocked in, a squirrel would appear by the window.
It would stare at the donuts as people bought them with cash.

Day after day, it watched the same routine.
And over time, it seemed to understand that donuts came after a trade. One morning, the squirrel showed up with something of its own, an acorn.

The worker threw a look of compassion, laughed it off, and gently slid a donut toward the squirrel through the open window.
The tiny customer grabbed its “purchase” and ran off.

And the next day? It came back with another acorn. Fair trade, or should she start charging the squirrel a quarter?
