As a person who doesn't do scents in her home, I can confirm that if you use plug-ins, candles, sprays, etc...people will notice. If you HAVE to have scents in your home choose a basic clean scent in the form of an oil diffuser, or spray. try to avoid plug-ins as they carry synthetic scents that come off as the strongest of all the scent boosters.
ALSO! smoking in the home...it is your home, and you can do what you want in it, but when it comes time to sell, you will have buyers that won't even enter the home if it smells of smoke. if you have a smoke smell in your home consider getting it professionally cleaned, painted, and any soft surfaces cleaned professionally.
