Exterior doors sticking? Older homes and some new homes will fight their door fitting too tightly in the jamb. Some will find that the dead bolt is tougher to lock with a key. Simple fixes for both. A 3 inch screw will solve most problems. If the door is sticking on the top of the jamb remove middle screw from the top hinge and sink a 3" torque screw into the jamb. If the door is sticking on the bottom remove the middle screw from the bottom hinge and replace with a 3" torque screw into the jamb as well. Most newer doors have an extra spot in the hinge for this screw. Don't over tighten just enough to create movement. Now for the tough deadbolt! Look at the jamb gap all around the door make sure it's even, around 3/16ths. If it is even then find out if the deadbolt is dragging the bottom or the top of the striker plate. (Usually it's the bottom) again check and see if there is a open spot for a screw in the hinge. If it's scraping the bottom of the striker plate then you will place a 3" screw in the top hinge. If its scraping the top of the striker plate then place a 3" screw in the bottom hinge into the jamb. Most times the reveal will not be even when you have these issues. If you're are not sure feel free to call us and we will gladly fix it or even coach you through it.
