Ruben Kalra, MD, is a double-board certified Harvard trained physician who takes a personalized functional and holistic approach in helping his patients with offices in Marin and Contra Costa County (addresses below).
Born and raised in California with a degree in psychology from UC Berkeley and training in anesthesiology and pain management at Harvard, Dr. Kalra is affable and approachable. He completed an anesthesia and critical care residency followed by a pain management fellowship at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. This stellar program enabled him to learn first-hand Brigham's pioneering integrative approaches in helping manage pain and mental illness.
Dr. Kalra is a strong advocate of neuroplasticity and using the body to heal itself including pioneering efforts in the use of platelet rich plasma and stem cells in the treatment of back pain as well as developing an innovative intravenous ketamine neuroplastic reset program.
As Chairman of the Cross-Campus Pain Management Team for the John Muir Hospitals in Walnut Creek and Concord, California from 2010-2015, Dr. Kalra led efforts in bringing intravenous ketamine care to the hospital, making it one of the first hospitals in the country to do so. He has completed over 10,000 anesthetics and intravenous infusions.
Dr. Kalra is one of the few pain doctors nationwide invited as a pain management expert for Grand Rounds and is recognized as a top doctor by Castle Connolly and several publications.
Dr. Kalra speaks Spanish and conversational Mandarin Chinese, Italian, Hindi, Bulgarian, and Haitian Creole. He enjoys surfing around the globe, playing tennis, barbecuing, yoga, and gardening.

Dr. Shinaman has a long-standing interest in integrative health and pain medicine. He has completed rigorous training programs in anesthesiology and critical care medicine at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, acupuncture and herbal medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, and pain medicine at the internationally renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Shinaman maintains double board certifications in anesthesiology and pain medicine. He has published many scientific articles and specialty-based textbook chapters on pain medicine. He was recognized by the California Society of Anesthesiologists as the top research physician in the state, is a Pfizer national pain scholar, and maintains membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Dr. Shinaman has lectured nationally on the treatments of complicated pain conditions and the cutting-edge applications of minimally invasive spinal procedures. He has is a treating physician for the Oakland Raiders football, Oakland Athletics baseball teams, as well as many regional fire departments and technology organizations. He has served as the chairman of the pain medicine committees at San Ramon Regional Medical Center in San Ramon, California, and Stanford Valley Care Hospital in Pleasanton, California.
Dr. Shinaman has special expertise in the complicated management of pain disorders coupled with depression or anxiety as well as the use of minimally invasive procedures to heal pain. He is the chief medical officer of WellBrain, a San Francisco tech company that focuses on using mindfulness to help alleviate human pain and suffering.
He spends his free time capturing landscape photographs and mountain biking along California’s Pacific coast.
