The summer camp participants from the created a fun craft with Project Turnaround. The students got to design an animal of their choosing with colorful paper. Creating crafts are great alternatives to alcohol and drug use. They also uplift your mood on the not so good days. If you are feeling crafty, gather simple materials like paper or objects around the house and create a fun craft!

At La Armada’s Recreation Center, youth designed their own Fugler-inspired “Feeling Monsters,” using art to explore their emotions in a healthy way.

Youth shared personal experiences, discovered positive coping skills, and identified safe people within their circles they could turn to for support. Activities like crafts provide a safe space for self-expression, build emotional awareness, and encourage healthy coping skills.

Healthy, supportive friendships are one of the strongest protective factors in staying substance-free.

What makes a healthy friendship?
• Trust and honesty
• Respect for boundaries
• Encouragement to make positive choices
• Support during difficult moments
• Having fun without substances

Youth who have friends who use substances are more likely to use themselves; it's important for youth to have strong, supportive peer relationships to avoid risky behaviors. The people you surround yourself with matter. Choosing friends who respect your goals and support a substance-free lifestyle can make all the difference.

At Project Turnaround, we focus on helping youth recognize healthy vs. unhealthy friendships and build connections that support their future.
