If you or someone you know has a disability, make sure you have a support network of people who can help during an emergency, such as a hurricane.

If someone you know has a communication disability, have them carry printed cards or save information on their devices to inform first responders and others how to communicate with them.

Most importantly, consider registering for STEAR (State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry). You can register for free every year in the fall or spring if you need assistance evacuating during a disaster or emergency due to a disability. Please note: You cannot register during an active emergency. Also, the STEAR program does not guarantee that you will receive a specific service during emergencies. For more information, call 2-1-1 or visit stear.tdem.texas.gov.

Before a tropical storm or hurricane impacts your area, take action to strengthen your home.

• Cover windows and doors with wood or storm shutters.
• Reinforce garage doors to withstand high winds.
• De-clutter your home's drains and gutters so water can be directed away from your home.
• Remove dead or weakened tree branches that could break and fall onto your home.
• Bring in outdoor furniture and any loose items that could be blown away and cause damage.
