Your daughter can do everything right… and still end up on the bench. It’s time we normalize walking away from teams that aren’t helping our daughters grow.
As a coach, one thing I struggle with is knowing that not every coach has every athlete’s best interest at heart.
More than anything, I want to see every single one of my athletes succeed. Whether their goal is to make a middle school team, play varsity, earn a college scholarship, or simply become more confident, I will do everything I’m capable of to help them get there.
Unfortunately, that’s not always the reality.
Some coaches are in it for the extra income. Some coach because their own child is on the team. Some stepped into the role because no one else would, and their heart just isn’t in it. There are also many incredible coaches who pour everything they have into every player—but not every athlete ends up in that environment.
Because of that, your daughter can do everything right. She can show up early, stay late, take lessons, put in extra work, improve her skills, and have a great attitude… and still not get the playing time she has earned. In some cases, she may even get cut.
That doesn’t automatically mean she isn’t good enough.
I’m not saying this to bash coaches. Coaching is one of the hardest jobs there is. You’ll never make everyone happy, and every decision you make is judged. I have so much respect for coaches who genuinely invest in kids.
But I also believe it’s okay to recognize when a team or coach is no longer helping your daughter grow.
You can respect a coach. You can even genuinely like them as a person. But that doesn’t mean they’re the right coach for your athlete.
It’s okay to respectfully walk away.
Don’t stay somewhere just because you’ve already invested time or because you’re afraid of what others will think. Find coaches who challenge your daughter, develop her, believe in her, and genuinely want what’s best for her.
At the end of the day, the goal isn’t just making a roster.
The goal is helping our daughters become the best athletes—and people—they’re capable of becoming.
❤️ Sometimes the bravest move isn’t staying. Sometimes it’s finding an environment where your daughter has the opportunity to grow, be challenged, and be valued.
