Tomorrow, June 14, is a special day not only for our nation, but for our area.
Flag Day is observed on June 14 each year because on June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes for the flag of the United States.
The first national observance of Flag Day took place 100 years after the original resolution on June 14, 1877. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation calling for the national observance of Flag Day on the 14th of June. Subsequently, legislation was signed into law by President Truman on August 3, 1949 which made Flag Day a permanent observance.
I would suggest to you, however, that we really must give credit to the birth of Flag Day being in our area! William T. Kerr, who resided in the Rennerdale section of Collier Township, made it his life's mission to encourage the celebration of Flag Day. He founded and promoted the American Flag Day Association. In fact, when President Truman signed the bill to make Flag Day a permanent holiday, Mr. Kerr was right at his side!
I hope you will join in flying Old Glory on June 14 (if indeed not every day!). While we may have many differences of opinion, and while there will always be those who will seek to foster divisiveness, we must strive to be one nation...indivisible!
While we all can have a sense of pride as we respect the flag of our great nation, I hope those of you in Collier have a special sense of pride, knowing that one of your sons was so very instrumental in assuring that we would have this celebration!
God bless America and God bless our Commonwealth and Happy Flag Day!
