Did you know that during the Spanish era, the Philippines exported piña cloth (pineapple fiber fabric) to Europe? This delicate, handwoven textile was so prized that it was considered more elegant than silk in Spanish royal courts. Piña’s sheer texture and intricate embroidery made it a luxury fabric, worn by European elites and even royalty.

The industry thrived, especially in areas like Iloilo, where skilled artisans created masterpieces. But with the rise of cheaper, mass-produced fabrics, piña cloth's European market declined. Today, it is preserved as a proud Filipino tradition, used in barong tagalog and formal wear.
